A social night isn't an exam. Nobody expects figures from you. People are there to enjoy the music and each other.

01Before you go

  • ShoesComfortable, smart shoes that don't grip the floor; dance shoes if you have them. Rubber-soled trainers grip the floor, make turns harder and tire your knees.
  • SparesA spare shirt and a small towel. A salsa night is warmer than you think.
  • ScentDeodorant yes. If you wear perfume, keep it light; you'll be dancing close.
  • WaterDrink regularly through the night. A tired body hears the music late.

02Asking for a dance

Eye contact, an open hand and “Would you like to dance?” is all it takes. On a social floor anyone can ask anyone, whoever leads and whoever follows.

Saying no is as normal as saying yes. “I'm taking a break, maybe later?” is a polite answer. If someone says no, don't push; smile and move on. Usually it's one song, sometimes two.

03On the floor

  1. Dance to your partner's level. The point isn't your hardest figure; it's a dance you both enjoy.
  2. Watch your surroundings. Salsa is mostly danced in a slot; when the floor is crowded, take smaller steps.
  3. Aerials and hard dips don't belong on a social floor. Keep them for the stage and for practice.
  4. Don't teach on the floor. Dance with your partner instead of correcting them; answer if they ask.
  5. If something hurts or makes you uncomfortable, you have every right to say so, and to end the dance politely.

04When the song ends

Say thank you. Walking your partner back to the edge of the floor is a small courtesy that people remember. Drinks stay off the floor; one spilled glass can cost someone an ankle.

05For your first night

Dancing only your basic step all night is completely fine. Watching from the side is part of learning too: look at how different people listen to the music.

If you'd like to understand the music of the night better, start with Hearing the music better.
